Part 2: Jane Impresses Her Mother-in-Law with Wall Decals

This was the big day. My wonderful creative paintings, otherwise known as vinyl wall art, would reveal my heretofore unknown artistic talents. I nervously put the finishing touches on my masterpiece. Although I had kept the nursery doors shut for two months to allow plenty of time to “concentrate” on the meticulous project, the whole thing took about three hours.
My loving husband Jonathan walked in to admire my handiwork. Of course, he was aware that what he was viewing was actually a composite of wall decals. Still, he whistled appreciatively and hugged me. "This is great! Now Mother will have to admit you have a creative and distinctive touch."
I returned his kiss and hurried out to the dining room to check on my table setting. This was to be a small family event, just the in-laws Cynthia and Brad, and sister-in-law Julie. I could hear the caterer bustling about in the kitchen. The delicious aroma of our gourmet meal wafted in, making our mouths water with anticipation.
Only 15 minutes to go before the family would arrive. Caressing my baby bump, Jonathan murmured that it was time to pay the caterer. We hurried into the kitchen, thanked her for her wonderful contribution, and provided a large tip. She left with ten minutes to spare.
No raw turkey for this celebratory meal. Everything lay waiting in supreme perfection. Add to this my magnificent nursery. My heart was near to bursting with pride. Jonathan poured me a celebratory glass of sparkling grape juice. Everyone else would have champagne, but I didn't mind. I sipped my bubbly in perfect contentment and placed the centerpiece of tiny rosebuds and baby's breath in the center of the table.
Soon the doorbell rang. Cynthia and Brad the dad walked in. "Something smells divine," said Brad. Cynthia gave an icy smile and handed over a brightly wrapped package. "This will brighten up the nursery," she said proudly. I took the package. "I'll open it after dinner," I said. "Jonathan, please get some champagne for your parents." The doorbell sounded again, and Julie walked in bearing another package. She set it beside her mother's offering that I had placed on an end table. "Enjoy your champagne while I bring in the dinner," I said cheerily, and exited to the kitchen. Soon everyone was seated at the table, enjoying a magnificent roast with all the trimmings.
Cynthia regarded me with new respect. "This is absolutely lovely" she commented. Jonathan grinned at her. "Just wait till you see what she's done with the nursery!" Soon we were all admiring my magnificent handiwork thanks to the lovely nursery wall decals. Cynthia gazed in amazement. "I had no idea you were so artistic," she said. "Jonathan, you've been hiding your wife's talents." "I wonder if she could do some murals for our den?" suggested Brad.
My triumph was complete! I would be the family's wall artist, thanks to the secret magic of vinyl wall decals. They'd never guess. "Of course I'll need absolute solitude so I can concentrate on my art," I murmured. They all nodded their agreement and understanding. Any artist would understand.
