Guest Blog Post: Learn Calligraphy in One Easy Lesson
Posted by Walls Need Love on 11/23/2011
If only I had known about vinyl wall art, I could have saved myself a lot of fussing and fuming, worrying and woe. It's the easiest thing in the world. You just buy vinyl wall decals from "Walls Need Love" and apply them to any clean, dry wall. They look like a masterpiece of calligraphy. You can even add art decals for a really professional look. But I'm getting ahead of my story.
My sister Penelope used to say, "Oh Marcie, you have ten thumbs! What is that you're trying to draw?" My horses looked like long tables with spindly legs, a tube with a circle in front and a bush stuck on behind. Dogs looked about the same, only they had a skinny tube stuck on behind. High school art class was a nightmare for me. I could tell the teacher was trying hard not to burst into peals of laughter when I turned in my latest attempt.
She was kind enough to give me a merciful C- for effort, and I left the art world behind. Math and English I could deal with. Then I took a job at the local community college adviser's office. The work wasn't too hard, and the hours could be fit around my class schedule. I worked 15 hours a week and took a course load of 14 hours. I was a busy gal.
My boss, being a typical stuck-in-the-past male, decided that, since I was his only female employee, I would be in charge of creating posters to brighten up the place and list our services. Girls, he concluded, are better at that sort of thing. I panicked. I had not yet discovered vinyl wall art.
I signed up for one of those calligraphy classes the college offers. So what if I couldn't draw? (except drawing flies to a picnic on a hot summer day) I could learn to do "beautiful writing." My penmanship wasn't so bad. We spent the first class using rulers and soft lead pencils to draw lines for our lettering. Not so bad. Mine sometimes came out a little crooked, but if you squinted they looked OK.
Next we started drawing lines full of circles. This is because most lower case letters (the little ones that are not capitals) use a lot of curves. My circles looked more like eggs, sort of squashed in. But I kept on drawing circles until I could produce a few that passed muster.
Meanwhile, my boss kept asking when I would get those posters done. I told him that I was under a lot of pressure, lots of studying to keep up with my classes, and all that.
Then came the day we branched out to creating actual letters. It looked like a long road to being able to produce a decent poster for the office wall. In despair, I started surfing the net when I got back home. I stumbled across this site called "Walls Need Love." Maybe I could find some advice there. But all they do is produce vinyl wall decals. How could I turn those into posters?
Wandering around the website, I found their Custom Text Tool. You could type in a quote and "Walls Need Love" would produce a vinyl wall decal with that quote. They'd deliver it to your door in a few days. Drying my tears, I used the text tool to create vinyl wall decals that list our services. I could apply these when I was alone in the office, and the job would be done. Who needs posters when you have vinyl wall art?
I ditched the calligraphy class. I'm free! Free at last!
